Arrow Up 02:34
arrow up the day’s begun light leaning in still skeleton can’t wait to see clearly rise your spirit’s weary and young arrow up my dear take heart this morning it won’t sting so sharp ghosts of yesterday they linger only in the shade and the dark and maybe it will be a long long time until you say that you are feeling fine again and until then loosen your tongue and let air fill those lungs arrow up your pain’s a gift even when it makes you twist you’ll find that agony can help you see things you once would have missed and maybe it will be a long long time until you say that you are feeling fine again and until then loosen your tongue and let air fill those lungs

Lovin 03:26
so it goes no summer wind or white snow just warm glow and sweet scent of bees building honeycomb if you ask i’m not one who’s known to move fast in my last i stayed and ignored all the forecasts take your time loving me heaven knows where you got such a grin and an eyeroll take it slow maybe it’s only a hand to hold take your time loving me are you sure if i asked you how can a bird feel so stirred and still sit wings folded on the furniture take your time loving me now i know there's more to what's here than might show still this glow is more than just me and you, you know

Grandeur 02:45
time to settle down overtake and wrestle youth limbs come undone calmer older now flight will only take you closer now shake this heart won’t break wait up for the restless ones fly close to the sun fourteen ages past think up think up think up think up think up think up real this change you feel opus dei today today this grandeur array fade the dreams away make it up with stronger words and tender concern grace such soft embrace tend toward something burned away see no decay brief yet sweet relief

Burn 03:38
this is how it burns you out burns you out beneath your flesh you turn still you find no rest walking home tonight i see there is still a light in me panicked still you wait it out and speaking through a softened mouth your words paint pictures in the air walking home tonight i see there is still a light in me carry onward thankfully and let the light see what it sees fever dreams you breathe them out and gripping tight to comfort now relief doesn’t even speak walking home tonight i see there is still a light in me carry onward thankfully and let the light see what it sees lifting there’s a way to go where trouble moves your aching soul sing it slowly not too low face the drummer even so suddenly it pierces you something new comes streaming through and you find you are now changed walking home tonight i see there is still a light in me carry onward thankfully and let the light see what it sees

Hammer Fist 04:40
coffee black no sugar thought i remember you taking cream in this diner i’m the amateur amateur boxer stepping into the ring i dodge the punch you ask ‘bout my mother say you hope she’s doing well i swing to miss ask gently ‘bout your brother if you see some traces of his former self lift this hammer fist taking turns to dodge and twist meet my eyes and split my lip noble art of the backfist still i’m taking hits waitress comes and the round is over asks us would you ladies like a slice of pie? can’t she see i’m in my corner with the menu and an icepack on my eye lift this hammer fist taking turns to dodge and twist meet my eyes and split my lip noble art of the backfist still i’m taking hits hours pass of stunted conversation it’s leaving me sore and yet no bruises bloom then i go forgetting hesitation saying maybe we could do it again soon lift this hammer fist taking turns to dodge and twist meet my eyes and split my lip noble art of the backfist still i’m taking hits

let’s slow this down it’s just the shout until the high notes peter out your eyes are closed hands held so close i’m holding onto every note and the endless pull is pulling me in and i don’t want to say no or simply jump in when the endless pull is making me spin i’m not giving up and i’m not giving in i don’t want to give in so slow this down we’ll let them miss it now i stole some of the evidence before they figured it out i just need time to let it unwind and i’m not quite sure how not to give in when the endless pull is pulling me in and i don’t want to say no or simply jump in when the endless pull is making me spin i’m not giving up and i’m not giving in i don’t want to give in when the endless pull is making me spin i’m not giving up and i’m not giving in i don’t want to give in so slow this down it’s just the shout until the high notes peter out

about

Jen Zimberg was in a painting course—a year-long study and practice in color—when she finally found the reason to record her first EP, what would become Arrow Up. A long-time bedroom songwriter and living-room performer, Jen hadn’t brought her music to a public audience. The songs are gentle, quiet numbers, but not without their strength. Jen raises a clear voice over a fingerpicked guitar; it’s not a dance party, yet perhaps the songs will lift you. If not to your feet, perhaps you’ll feel an inward lift when listening to the songs on Arrow Up.

It required a bold exploration in color, a new medium for Jen, for her to recognize what already lives in her relationship to music. It was this recognition that led Jen to record and perform: that art can lift our souls into movement, and we can experience a different way of being from the everyday. Maybe art can help us learn and grow.
